Many fans and critics reckon that this was the best trio Oscar Peterson ever had, with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen - and this DVD presents them in concert, in London, in October 1964 - recorded live for BBC TV’s Jazz 625 program, in front of a live studio audience. The trio is in outstanding form and Peterson displays his renowned technique on such fast tunes as "Place St. Henri" - one of four of his own compositions included. His choice of Bill Evans' "Waltz for Debby" is particularly interesting, considering that Evans' and Peterson's styles were so dissimilar.
Another of the show's highlights is the performance of "Yours is My Heart Alone" (originally "Dein ist mein ganzes Herz") from the operetta "Das Land des Lächelns" by Franz Lehar (1870- 1948). Oscar makes it really jazzy! Another classical touch comes at the end of "My One and Only Love", when he subtly quotes the melody of "Jesus, Joy of Man's Desiring", from J. S. Bach's famous Cantata BWV 147. There are also four bonus tracks taken from the "Nat 'King' Cole" TV Show, in which Peterson (with his earlier trio of Ray Brown & Jo Jones) joins Nat and stars from Jazz At The Philharmonic including Coleman Hawkins, Stan Getz, Roy Eldridge, Flip Philips, Illinois Jacquet, Herb Ellis, with the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. Total Time : 50 min. / B&W / Mono.
