Impressive 1964 concert at Wembley Town Hall by an all star combo – Coleman Hawkins on alto; Harry “Sweets” Edison, trumpet; Sir Charles Thompson, piano; Jo Jones, drums and bassist Jimmy Woode (formerly with the Duke Ellington Orchestra). Plenty of solo space for Hawkins, Edison and Thompson while Jo Jones’ subtle drumming style comes to the fore in “Caravan”. In addition there is a 30 minute film of Coleman Hawkins in Brussels two years earlier playing with top ex-pat Americans and French pianist George Arvanitas. The set kicks off with Hawkins’ unaccompanied improvisation “Blowing for Adolphe Sax”.
