Two previously unissued concerts given by the unique multi reed player Roland Kirk, about whom Charles Mingus said: This man is what jazz is all about. He’s real. The first was filmed in Milan in 1962 where Kirk shared the stage with another famous blind musician, the Catalonian pianist Tete Montoliu, and star rhythm men Tommy Potter (bass), & Kenny Clarke (drums). Five years later the regular Roland Kirk quartet -- Ron Burton (piano), Steve Novosel (bass) & Jimmy Hopps (drums) — put on a passionate performance at a jazz festival in Prague. The material from this set was being tried out live before being included in the album The Inflated Tear, recorded shortly afterwards. Seeing the superbly creative Kirk in action armed with a large collection of wind instruments is an experience not to be missed and both the sound and image on this DVD are of a high quality.

Jazzwise - Keith Shadwick
He is exciting and charismatic. He plays with maximum force and commitment. His presence is mesmerising. With over 70 mins of music on the DVD, it is no doubt one of the gems of this series and worth seeking out. ***
