Track Listing for Carioca CD and DVD This special edition of the new Chico Buarque album, Carioca, includes a bonus DVD, Descontruçao , which is a 58 minute documentary showing the whole creation process of the new album including the moments of composition and recording in the studio. The artist reveals how difficult it was coming back to music after a long time dedicated to writing, but how he overcame his doubts and found great enjoyment with fellow musicians and production staff in the creation of this album.
Chico Buarque’s status as one of Brazil’s greatest performers & song-writers would be disputed by few, if any, and Carioca is his first album of new material since the release of the acclaimed 1998 ‘As Cidades’ album.. It’s also his debut recording for Biscoito Fino, probably the most respected and successful young label in Brazil. Also, Buarque is heading a big Brazilian World Cup Concert in Germany on June 16th.
‘Carioca’ is Brazilian for a person born in Rio de Janeiro, and was Chico’s nickname as a boy, having moved to live in Sao Paulo. On this album he addresses how his postcard home city has lost out to Sao Paolo, the economic capital, and is increasingly losing its battle against the classic modern social problems of poverty, drugs, rising crime, etc - while still celebrating its legendary charm & nostalgia. Yet he does all this with enticing melodies, superb orchestrations and the legendary rhythms of his musical roots. On Carioca, Buarque paints a definitive portrait of modern Rio, taking us behind the tourist façade to reveal both the grim realities and the unsinkable joie de vivre of his fascinating city.
