The first volume of the Mandekalou session was released two years ago to universal acclaim. Musicians assembled by supremo African producer Ibrahima Sylla were brought to studio to make a definitive recording of the Manding people.

The second volume was recorded in the warm ambiance of the Bogolan Studio in Bamako – the birthplace of so many other works. It is an ode to the Mali Empire, which stretched from Mauritania to the Ivory Coast, a 13th-century foreshadow of what was to become ECOWAS – the Economic Community of West African States.

In Volume Two of the Mandekalou saga, the two cousins, Kassemadi Diabaté, the Malian Jali, and, Sekouba “Bambino” Diabaté, the Guinean, continue their adventures with the Malian divas, Kandia Kouyaté and Bako Dagnon.

Once again, this album features Kerfala Kanté, one of the most high-profile Guinean singers, and Kemo Conde of the Djoliba instrumental ensemble, a group which has performed with the likes of Kouyate Sory Kandia, the greatest Mandinka singer who passed away in 1977 and whose triple CD “Epopée Mandingue” served as an inspiration to Mandekalou.

Reviews
fRoots - Rick Sanders
It works directly on the heart. In all seriousness, do not allow this album to pass you by.
The Guardian - Robin Denslow
This second volume, again produced by Ibrahima Sylla, is even better…..
Songlines - Robin Denselow
If anything, this album is even more confident and powerful than that first Mandekalou release. It's another West African classic.
Telegraph - Mark Hudson
While the first Mandekalou album was one of the most acclaimed world-music CDs of recent years, this second volume is even better.
