For centuries music has been a common link between the Arabs and Jews of North Africa. Decolonization however drove a wedge between the two communities and most of the well known musicians who performed in the popular judeo-arab tradition emigrated to France. Reinette was no exception. A native of Tiaret in Western Algeria and daughter of a Moroccan rabbi, she lost her sight as a child but soon excelled musically and eventually became a well known radio star in Algiers in the fifties, singing the classical treasures of the Arab-Andalucian tradition, folk music of Oran and the chaabi of the casbah. She was exiled to France in 1962 and kept a low musical profile for over twenty years until a revival of interest gave her the opportunity to perform and record again. She died in 1998.
