80 years old on February 17th, Friedrich Cerha is now a ‘grand old man’ of Viennese contemporary music, with several operas and a wealth of other major works to his credit. So far, he is only represented in the CD catalogue by one disc of chamber music, so that these live recordings from the ‘wien modern’ festival 2005, which include the world-première performance of his large-scale Violin Concerto, fill a serious gap in our knowledge of an important European composer.
