He will undoubtedly be called ‘The Norwegian Tom Waits’ - and indeed his vocal delivery, lyrics, songs and even visual appearance all sometimes have strong elements of the great man - but Mr Altenburg has his own individual approach and has made a gem of a debut album, with his beguiling blend of blues, jazz, folk, and US & British pop/rock.
Background information on this singer, songwriter, pianist, guitarist is hard to come by. From a small southern Norwegian seaside town he arrived in Oslo via the coastline railway. He made a notable contribution to the pop music of Number Seven Deli (This Norwegian band was voted Norway's most promising unsigned band by national radio P3 in 2001, and had several hits) and as member of the folk/soft rock band Jim Stark, up until the platinum selling "Morning Songs" in 2004.
Since then, Asbjorn Ornand Altenburg Ribe has been fully dedicated to his own music, performing under his two middle names, with his current band : Bjorn Holm (Vidar Busk, Respatexans, Odd Nordstoga) on double bass and vocals, and Simen Maehlum (Number Seven Deli, Jim Stark, Ephemera) on drums and vocals. On the album, there are a selection of other guest musicians, including Kid Anderson of the Charlie Musselwhite Band. Give this rewarding album a listen. You’ll want to hear it again.
"Our maritime soul is performed to give drunk seamen the chance to dance with stuck-up church ladies" Ornand Altenburg
