Jimmy Giuffre’s first recordings as a leader were a bold attempt to create a new form for improvised music which he described as Jazz with a non pulsating beat. Feeling that clarity and freedom had become increasingly inhibited by the insistent pounding of a rhythm section he set out in these Hollywood sessions to create more space for his solo instruments – clarinet, tenor and baritone sax – with the beat acknowledged but unsounded. Originally issued as Capitol LPs under the titles : Tangents in Jazz & Jimmy Giuffre.
Reviews
Jazz Review - Ronald Atkins
With hindsight, we can see how Giuffre developed the aesthetic that soon brought dividends with "The Train And The River". Aiming for the excessive purity of tone that become a trademark of his clarinet playing.
Jazzwise - Alyn Shipton
West Coast mainstream from the master clarinettist and tenorist in the mid-50's before his free-improv period.
