This CD presents a one-off concert that took place during one of the Modern Jazz Quartet's annual appearances at Town Hall in New York when alto sax star Paul Desmond was invited to perform as a guest artist for the second half of their 1971 Christmas Day concert. This is the only known recording of Desmond playing with the full MJQ : Milt Jackson (vb), John Lewis (p), Percy Heath (b), Connie Kay (d).

To round off the CD there is also a bonus of a complete 7-number set played by the MJQ at the Philadelphia Opera during the summer of 1992, with Mickey Roker on drums. Splendid sound quality and 20-bit remastering.
