A second volume of Alma de América (‘the soul of America’) devised and compiled again by Daniela Romano and Laurent Balandras to celebrate the influence of Latin-American music in feature films and popular culture - and comes in an attractive, double-gatefold digipack with 16-page booklet.
As with the first volume, this compilation covers a wide and sometimes intentionally kitsch spectrum, including : the more sophisticated Pop-Latin fusions of Della Reese, Eartha Kitt, Shirley Bassey, Connie Francis, Harry Belafonte, & Marlilyn Monroe; the latin-jazz stylings of Dizzy Gillespie, Mel Torme and Xavier Cugat; the Franco-Latin strand of Serge Gainsbourg & Josephine Baker; and interpretations by contemporary artists such as Lila Downs, Yuri Buenaventura, Cake, Arielle Dombasle, and even Sinead O’Connor ! Alma de América is a tribute to the ever-broadening genre of Latin-American music, but it is also a tribute to its many screen interpreters, whom three generations of film-goers and record buyers have grown to love.
