Issued for the first time ever, this DVD documents a Bill Evans Trio concert given for TV broadcast in Rome, December 1979. It was barely a year before Evans’ death, but he agreed to undertake a long international tour with dates in North & South America, and Europe.
The pianist had been devastated by the death of his brother Harry that year, and had become even more dependent on drugs and alchohol - yet his playing was still of the highest order, given even greater spirituality by his grief. He is accompanied by his then regular bassist and drummer - Marc Johnson and Joe LaBarbera, respectively. Another Rome concert on this tour has become available on CD, but this DVD is a completely different performance and has never been released in any format. TOTAL TIME: 44:30 m. COLOR/STEREO |
