Yes, this is the John Williams of sound track fame, composer of Star Wars, Jaws, Superman etc etc etc.
Back in 1956/58 when these recordings were made, John Towner Williams was already making his mark as arranger and pianist with plenty of TV and studio work. This double CD presents Williams’ first recordings , demonstrating his jazz credentials at the piano with small combos (hand-picked West Coast sessionmen like Herb Geller, Howard Roberts, Buddy Collette) and then leading a larger orchestra with Johnny Desmond as featured vocalist. A fascinating glimpse of the early career of the world’s best known film composer.
Reviews
The Jazz Rag - Greg Murphy
His improvisations are fleet. Williams has written arrangements that give the soloist and the ensemble the most space to provide some rich tone colours.
Jazz Journal - Alun Morgan
Not all of this is outright jazz of course but there's plenty to interest many readers.
