Jazz Lab was formed in 1957 by Gigi Gryce (as) & Donald Byrd (tp) to experiment with different musical structures and instrumentation. Gryce had trained in classical composition and his jazz career barely lasted 8 years while Byrd went on to become well known for his excursions into jazz fusion. The Jazz Lab recordings, presented in three volumes, represent the meetings of some of the most fertile and inquisitive musical minds of the day and encapsulate the spirit of late ‘50s modern jazz. The set of three CDs is obviously aimed at people with particular interest in this group but this is the only one with both nonet and quintet tracks and it has enough variety to make it thoroughly enjoyable.
