José Contreras returns to the roots of Cumbia, Columbia’s most popular music form, which over the years has moved further from its Afro-Amerindian origins, becoming a highly orchestrated ballroom style. Using folk wind instruments such as the gaita and caña de millo and traditional drums, the group recreate the festive dance music that was part of the culture of the black population of Columbia’s Atlantic coast.
