Karin Krog was born in 1937, made her first radio broadcast at the age of 19 and went on to establish a reputation as one of Norway’s foremost jazz singers, equally at home with standards, blues or electronic experimental techniques. This album was recorded in 1985 with renowned British improviser and composer John Surman who played synth & soprano sax, contributed original pieces and co-produced with Karin who adds some exotic percussion instruments to her vocals. This was an important musical relationship and years later the two still perform together. In her own words “After many years of singing all sorts of songs, there is still a small voice inside urging experiment. Freestyle is a collection of pieces in which I’ve tried to use my voice in different ways, different settings and styles of music…”
