Often, one of the best results of a ‘centenary year’ is the spotlight it places on some overshadowed part of a composer’s oeuvre. Shostakovich (b.1906) is certainly not best remembered for his piano music, but although his output was not extensive, it does contain some genuinely important works. So it is good to have ACCORD’s series of recordings, made between 1988 and 1994 by brilliant young German pianist Caroline Weichert, repackaged into a handsome set, to celebrate the centenary.
