New CD recorded in Paris by Swedish percussionist Bengt Berger, who worked with Don Cherry and recorded an ECM album with him. Berger was strongly influenced by West African music, but with his current band - saxplayer Jonas Knutsson and bassist Christian Sperring - the net is cast much wider to include Arab, Israeli, East European and blues styles - the name of this recent label, ‘Country & Eastern’ was taken from his light-hearted description of his own music (though there’s nothing overtly ‘country’ about it). All 3 musicians took part in the Don Cherry tribute CD released on C&E early in 2006.

Swedish trio of drummer, saxist and bassist. It's jazz, but the new Nordic sort where traditional tunes can become themes to improvise around, but isn't that the way a living tradition should be, infusing all branches of music?
