All but forgotten German pianist Jutta Hipp’s musical career was brief and intense, yielding a tiny recorded output, but it was long enough for her to be labelled “Europe’s first lady of jazz”. Leonard Feather and visiting American musicians on a 1954 JazzClub USA tour were so impressed that recording sessions were arranged for her and her band in Frankfurt with eight of the resulting sides issued as a Blue Note 10”. Collected here are these tracks and the rest of her complete German recordings from 1954. The following year she moved to the States and, after a brief flurry of activity, left the jazz world altogether. She died penniless in New York in 2003.
