Without becoming a big star, tenor sax player Harold Land participated in two important but short lived jazz combos of the fifties – the Max Roach/Clifford Brown Quintet & the Curtis Counce Quintet. Between 1961 and 1963 he entered the studio several times with the underrated trumpet player Carmell Jones and now for the first time the pair’s complete sessions together have been assembled on a 2CD set. Frank Stazzeri plays piano on all the earlier tracks and the collection ends with tunes from the LP Jazz Impressions of Folk Music.

Trumpeter Jones is famously underrated. Jones was a crisply inventive hard bop trumpeter with a telling line in edgy lyricism and he is well partnered by the undemonstratively powerful tenor sax of Land.
