Pierre Wissmer was championed at an early age by Ernest Ansermet, who conducted his piano concerto with the composer as soloist. Born in Geneva, (taking french nationality in 1958), he went on to become a great symphonist, as well as a composer of operas, oratorios and concertos (including one for guitar). Many composers, (including Boulez, Britten, Henze, Jolivet and Walton, to name just a few), have at one time abandoned the flamboyance of the grand orchestra for more intimate refinements. Wissmer was one such composer, actually producing a greater number of works for the guitar than for his own instrument, the piano.
