It is amazing to discover, in the fascinating notes which accompany this generous ARBITER album, that Francis Planté, as a young virtuoso in the 1860s, played duets with Liszt! An active performer even in his 90s, Planté could be regarded as the grandfather of the French piano tradition, which is also documented on this splendid disc with recordings by Saint-Saëns and Ricardo Viñes, amongst others.
