In Paris during the ‘80s the café La Roue Fleurie, run by Serge Camps and his father, was the venue that kept alive the traditions of jazz manouche and other forms of gipsy music. Musicians who turned up regularly to play into the small hours included the gipsy guitarist Angelo DeBarre and young bassist Frank Anastasio, son of a Sicilian luthier. With Serge Camps on guitar the result was a formidable trio which recorded in 1989 for the Hot Club of Norway label. This CD re-issue presents almost an hour of virtuoso musicianship and a repertoire which spans the whole range of gitan styles, from Hungarian dances and Rumanian folksongs to jazz standards and original Django tunes.
Reviews
The Jazz Rag - Sally-Ann Worsfold
There is a trace of the Reinhardt influence, but Angelo De Barre is his own man with his own ideas, whose style also bears traces of Jim Hall and Tal Farlow. The remastering is excellent.
