A highly recommended new album by the still greatly under-rated pianist, Bill Carrothers - on which he brings his own reflective and absorbing style to nine slightly less common popular American standards, written between 1920 and 1940, by composers including Cole Porter, DeSylva-Brown-Henderson, and Mack David - and including the songs ‘Beyond the blue horizon’, ’Brother, can you spare a dime?’, ’Button up your overcoat’, ’Stars fell on Alabama’ and the title track.

Thematically and historically perhaps it moves on from his remarkable “Armistice 1918” album on Sketch in 2003. The Minneapolis-born pianist often seems at home in Europe, and on this album recorded in Munich, he is in the company of an excellent Belgian rhythm section Nicolas Thys, bass and Dré Pallemaert, drums. Carrothers has recorded with a wide selection of top jazz artists and under his own name on Dreyfus, Birdology, Fresh Sound New Talent and Sketch.

Jazz Review - Brian Morton
He's a remarkable fellow, hugely gifted with technique, already absolutely distinctive in touch.
