This is Rio-born Hamilton de Holanda’s 4th CD under his own name, although he has played on many albums. Only in his late 20's, his reputation as an instrumentalist has reached the point where comparisons are being made to great Brazilian musicians such as Toquinho and Baden Powell - although his chosen instrument is the 10 string mandolin ('bandolim') rather than guitar, and he is a stunning virtuoso (as the 2006 Womex audience witnessed at his concert). De Holanda’s music is rooted in choro but there’s also a jazz sensibility at work with plenty of melodic improvisation and an expansion of the chordal structures beyond those normally associated with Brazilian street music. The quintet have been performing as a unit for several years and the line-up of mandolin, guitar, bass, drums & chromatic harmonica makes for a rich acoustic blend.
