Hugo Reyne’s epic journey through the stage works of Lully continues apace. This brand-new set is a world première recording, of a subject suggested to Lully’s librettist by the Sun King himself – the story of Amadis de Gaule, based on a hugely popular 16th century novel. Lully seems to have been glad of the change in subject matter, from Greek mythology to a mediaeval romantic hero, and his music sings and storms with a rare splendour, wonderfully captured by Hugo Reyne’s excellent ensemble.
