In 2005, the Montpellier Opera had the brilliant idea of juxtaposing performances of two works based on Oscar Wilde’s ‘Salomé’ – the ‘famous’ one by Richard Strauss, celebrating the centenary of its first performance in 1905, and the much rarer version by Avignon-born Antoine Mariotte, premièred in 1908 and influenced by Debussy and Vincent d’Indy, with whom Mariotte studied at the Schola Cantorum. An altogether less sensational treatment of Wilde’s decadent shocker than Strauss’s full-blooded debauch, Mariotte’s work is nevertheless well worth reviving, and this excellent ‘live’ recording (a world première) makes the best possible case for it.
