Jaune Toujours is an explosive mix of rock, chanson, ska, gypsy, latin, balkan and brassband. - or kick-ass roots band as they refer to themselves - and this new live CD, Club (with a bonus DVD of 5 live tracks & 3 videos) shows just why his 6-piece, Belgian band have such an excellent international reputation for dynamic gigs - playing with their guts and aiming at the audiences feet, yet with intelligent and poetic lyrics full of sincere social commitment.
Jaune Toujours sing in French and occasionally Dutch, Romanès, Italian and Spanish - striving to speak for those who, too often, are not heard. Piet Maris, founder of the group, initially introduced influences from his favourite bands : Les Négresses Vertes, Mano Negra, Ramones and The Clash. Then his guitar took a long time returning from the repair shop, so he used his accordion in the meantime - not realising that he had just taken the first step toward developing a unique new style for the band.
JT at their bottom-booting best....careering brass, pumping accordeon, lead singer Piet Maris’s raw, declamatory vocals, the dips into jazz and dub, it’s all here Jamie Renton, fRoots Jan/Feb 2007 issue, reviewing Club. |

The Guardian - Robin Denselow
Moody European balladry, frantic Gypsy jazz, slinky riffs fairground music, and echoes of reggae and ska. Surely destined to become one of the great European party bands.
SUNDAY TIMES - CLIVE DAVIS
The self-styled ""kick-as roots band" are one of those unpredictable, endlessly eclectic outfits who manage to assimilate countless influences, from gypsy wedding band to reggae and old-school musette. The combination generates irresistible joie de vivre."

Worth picking up even if you already own their three previous CDs. If you're new to them, then this is very much the place to start. Careering brass, pumping accordeon, raw declamatory vocals, the dips into jazz and dub…it's all here
