This reissue of the 1956 LP Hoagy Sings Carmichael restores to availability one of his best albums - featuring the great vocalist & songwriter backed by such top jazz names as Harry Edison, Art Pepper, Jimmy Rowles, Don Fagerquist & Nick Fatool - plus splendid arrangements by Johnny Mandel.
In addition, this release also boasts a second complete LP, The Stardust Road (one of the very first 33 rpm albums, which originally appeared a few years after the 1946 publication of Carmichael’s autobiographical book by the same name). In fact, as was often the case in the early days of the LP, no new music was recorded for this album, as it was a compilation of selections first issued as 78 rpm discs during previous years. The Stardust Road contains recordings made from 1939 to 1947 including original versions of many of Hoagy’s most famous compositions. Full lyrics of all the songs are included in the 20-page booklet.
Born in 1899, Hoagy Carmichael’s talents as singer, pianist & film actor have tended to obscure public awareness of his greatest accomplishment : one of the master composers of American popular song - writing such evergreens as : Georgia On My Mind, Rockin’ Chair, Two Sleepy People, Skylark and Stardust and many more. He died in 1981.
