These are Grant Green’s first recordings, at two New York studio sessions, in December 1959 - with Jimmy Forrest, Elvin Jones, Harold Mabern & Gene Ramey. Grant Green was born in St Louis in 1931; started playing professionally at 13 and by the early ‘60’s had become one of the most remarkable guitar players in jazz history. He went to Chicago in 1959, following the advice of tenor sax player Jimmy Forrest, who set up this session with fellow musicians who were all at that time in trumpeter Harry “Sweets” Edison’s group.

It becomes clear from the beginning that, although he had yet to develop a style of his own (the influence of Charlie Christian is very noticeable on these tracks), his musical talent, expression and fire are already present, as well as a very personal sound on the electric guitar. Despite the fact that these were his first sessions ever, he seemingly exhibits no nerves; he is given ample space to solo, and even has a solo guitar feature on the ballad “But Beautiful”. There are 8 bonus tracks from the same session, including 4 alternate takes - although on some of these Green only plays rhythm or is not present.
