Over the years the Malavoi sound – a spicey sweet & sour concoction of violins and carribean rhythms – has become synonymous with the popular music of the French West Indies. The ensemble from Martinique was an early performer on the “world music” stage, distinguished by an effortless fusion of tradition and modernity. Malavoi continued to make records until 1999 but these are the very first the group recorded, in 1969, having formed from the nucleus of a youthful band, “The Merry Lads”.
