Southern Indian rhythms played on the mridangam, a double headed drum considered the king of percussion and the queen of melody. Carnatic music differs from the Hindustani music of the north in that it was not affected by Iranian and Moghul influences. It is based on a system of seventy two scales and numerous rhythmic cycles. This recital is performed by K.V.Prasad, a highly sought after player and former winner of the All India Radio prize for mridangam, accompanied by Ghatam and Kanjira.
