| An interesting well documented collection of rarities with more than half the CD devoted to the complete vintage recordings of singer Myra Taylor who fronted some favourite KC bands, firstly Harlan Leonard and his Rockets and then the Jimmy Keith Orchestra. Amongst the sides recorded with Leonard was a snappy version of I Don’t Want Set the World on Fire, which would be slowed right down to become a hit for the Inkspots much later. Myra exemplified the smooth style that was the female vocalist’s ideal and her showbiz career went on forever. Three tracks by Ella Mae Morse, who could handle anything from jazz to country to lush pop, were recorded in Los Angeles but with a largely Kansas City backing band, including Pete Johnson and the disc is completed by a session from ex Harlan Leonard reedman Earl Jackson (Buddy Tate, tenor sax). |
