Saxophonist John Tchicai famously played on Coltrane’s “Ascension” album, co-founded the New York Contemporary Five with Archie Shepp & Don Cherry and The New York Art Quartet with Rosewell Rudd & Milton Graves, and recorded with Albert Ayler and John Lennon. Most of this between 1963 and 66 when he lived in New York City. “Hymn To Sophia” (which comprises half this album) is a very different direction : composed by Tchicai it is an unusual religious choral-orchestral work with choir, vocal soloists, and a small orchestra of two violins, double bass, marimbas & percusion with Tchicai on soprano sax & bass clarinet and Christian Kyhl sopranino sax & alto clarinet. The 2nd half of the CD is a powerful trio jam session with Tchicai on tenor sax with organ & drums. There is also 21-minutes of DVD footage. Tchicai was born in Copenhagen to a Danish mother & Congolese father.
