Dr L. Subramaniam is the pre-eminent Indian violinist, in the same way that Ravi Shankar is for the sitar - and both have been enthusiastic about using their great virtuoso talents in settings well outside their traditional musical roots. On this studio album, “Meetings”, recorded in 2005/6, Subramaniam joins Danish alto & soprano saxophonist Karsten Vogel on a musical project that blends Indian music and jazz. They are backed by Ole Fick on electric & acoustic guitar, and Klaus Menzer on percussion.

Subramaniam’s violin has a wonderful rich, haunting quality and Vogel’s pure tone is reminiscent perhaps of Jan Garbarek. The compositions, all by Vogel, have a fluid, mesmeric feel - melodic but with a strong sense of improvisation. The solos and interplay are breathtaking and the recording has a wonderful depth. Vogel is a cult figure for Progressive Rock and Jazz fans, especially across Europe, as the mastermind behind the legendary vintage-era bands Secret Oyster and Burning Red Ivanhoe, and as a permanent member of Taylor's Universe and Taylor's Free Universe. Subramaniam toured America & Europe in the 70’s with Ravi Shankar & George Harrison, and has recorded extensively under his own name since that time, in jazz, rock & European classical settings as well as traditional Indian classical.
