Egypt has Oum Kalsoum, I am the Oum Kalsoum of Algeria.
The grandmother from the West was exaggerating a bit when she said that, but it is true that in the 1930s she laid the foundations of the themes of Raï music, with explicit lyrics which gave her quite a reputation. Remitti’s verbal audacity, her acid humour and her sense of irony shocked the puritans who kept her away from the big stages of Algeria, confining her to dive bars and to private parties. Only after the big Raï event of Bobigny in 1986 was she finally booked into a public venue. After that, she conquered audiences in Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Rome, Madrid and Berlin and London, giving formidable live performances with musicians and dancers, expressing her talents as a comedian, with mimics, heavy breathing and suggestive shoulder thrusts. Here are a few of her songs, which have since become classics, like El khir mra, Touche Mami Touche and Ghir el Baroud. Cheikha Rimitti died in 2006, having played a live set with her friend Khaled just two days previously.
The Maghreb Soul series is dedicated to the formative years of the Raï genre, a fusion of the North African Arabic sound and musical intonations with the glitzy pop flooding over from the other shores of the Mediterranean. Five albums in all make up the series, featuring artist collections by Cheb Khaled, Cheb Mami, Cheb Hasni, Cheikha Rimitti and a various artists collection. |

| The Guardian - Robin Denselow |
| Cheikha Rimitti was a stirring, feisty performer who was far more edgy and exciting than her younger, more commercially minded rivals. |
| Mojo - David Hutcheon |
| Shows why the grand dame of rai was so revered. |
| The Wire - Clive Bell |
| An unstoppable veteran who began recording in 1954 and continued to scandalise respectable society till her death last year, still performing at the age of 83.
