Born in the overcrowded suburban slums of Piraeus, the son of a bouzouki player, George Dalaras can now fill the Olympic soccer stadium in Athens when he puts on a show. Dalaras’ singing career started to take off after the fall of the military dictatorship when he performed with Mikis Theodorakis and since then he has achieved superstar status by moulding the traditional forms of rembetika, laika & diomotika into a new genre of modern popular music – a sound that is unmistakedly Greek. “Shining Night” is an album of songs written specially by George’s friends. His 2007 European tour includes a date at the London Palladium in May.
