A tenor saxophonist from a Sicilian immigrant family, Joe Holiday had his own group in Newark by the time he was twenty and more or less continued as a leader from then on. As a soloist his chief influences were Stan Getz and Wardell Gray, but despite success with his own recordings his talent remained under exploited and he became overlooked in the big name scramble. Plenty of top class sidemen however supported him in the studio, witness these sessions from 1953-1957 where the personnel includes among others: Art Farmer, Duke Jordan, Thad Jones, Eddie Bert, Joe Newman.
