► Captain Luke (b 1926) grew up on a poor farm in South Carolina listening to his uncle sing to the mule as he ploughed
► Blessed with a rich baritone voice, he travelled round the Piedmont area using whatever instrumentation was available, performing at drink houses – the social hubs of the black community in North Carolina
► Broad repertoire on this CD ranges from the folk tradition (Old Black Buck) to the songs of Tony Joe White, taking in the blues on the way.
