10 years ago, Stéphane Pompougnac landed a residency behind the decks at Hôtel Costes. He had been something of a protégé of Claude Challe at the Bains Douches, and it was Claude who recommended him to the Costes brothers, who were looking for a specific ambiance for their opulent hôtel in the Rue St. Honoré.
His style and selection was noted and favourably received by the clientèle, resulting in the decision to gather together and compile the best of the tracks he played regularly there. The first Costes collection filtered discretely into popular consciousness, a dark horse mix of luxurious, eclectic and sophisticated tunes. It soon became an international success and was followed by a second volume in the same year.
Realisation that something unique was happening here, Stéphane defied convention by slowing down, rather than speeding up, the rate of release, and we now expect every October to bring a new volume. Time progressed, and the collection grew with unhurried regularity. This year is no exception, and volume 10 does not disappoint.
As a monument to the series, there will also be a luxuriously boxed set of all ten CDs, each presented in a numbered drawer, the whole exquisitely enveloped in fine fabric. This will be released in November 2007.
