· Alemayehu Eshete is one of the greatest singers from the ‘golden age’ of modern Ethiopian music - the 1960s & 70s. Heavily influenced by US rock ‘n’ roll, soul & blues, he was renowned for his frenetic stage performances, earnining him nicknames like the ‘Ethiopian James Brown’ or ‘The Abyssinian Elvis’.

· On these 1970s tracks he is backed by a band led by the incomparable organist, pianist, composer, arranger, Girma Beyene - a key figure in many 60s & 70s Ethiopian bands, who was also influenced by US pop & soul, but retained his own unique African sound.

· This is Volume 22 in the remarkable, widely acclaimed Ethiopiques series, on the French Buda label, overseen by the series producer Francis Falceto. Volume 9 in the series was also devoted to Eshete, as well as tracks on Volumes 3, 8, 10 & 13.

· The Ethiopiques series has recently had exceptional, renewed press coverage following the release of the Union Square ‘Best of Ethiopiques’ compilation.

Reviews
Songlines - Chris Menist
There is literally not one duff track on the entire CD. The quality playing of the various musicians, often moonlighting from the state-run bands, effortlessly shines through. On the strength of the two latest editions, long may it continue. *****
The Guardian - Robin Denselow
Ballads as well as gently stomping dance songs show off his rhythmic and distinctive, almost eastern-sounding voice, against driving R&B keyboard and brass work. He's still singing, and surely deserves a comback. ***
fRoots - Rick Sanders
pure emotional voltage, a crackling loose live wire.
