After three acclaimed albums on the Rykodisc label, Brazilian singer, songwriter, guitarist and percussionist Vinicius Cantuaria releases his new CD, Cymbals, on the French Naïve label.
Cantuaria is one of the most forward-looking Brazilian musicians, and this subtle, melodic new album, recorded in New York, combines a strong jazz influence with traditional Latin rhythms - continuing his inspired, individual reconstruction of traditional Brazilian folk music using additional contemporary music influences.
He is joined by a stellar cast of mainly US (New York) musicians : pianist Brad Meldhau, guitarist Marc Ribot, saxophonist Dave Binney, trumpeter Michael Leonard (Steely Dan, etc), and violinist Jenny Scheinman & cellist Erik Friedlander (both Cryptogramophone label artists).
Vinicus Cantuaria's albums, always critics' favourites, have included collaborations with pioneering musicians such as Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Brian Eno, Bill Frisell and Arto Lindsay. Cymbals is mostly self-composed but there is one track co-written with Angélique Kidjo, two with Nana Vasconcelos, plus a Tom Jobim song.
Riot Squad Publicity have been handling the PR : there is an article & 4-star review in the Jan/Feb Songlines, and an interview & review in the March issue of Mojo, an review-interview in Jazzwise, and upcoming reviews in Observer Music Monthly, Echoes, The Times, Guardian, Sunday Times, Independent, and more.

Reviews |
| Mojo - David Hutcheon |
| Cymbals celebrates the golden anniversary of bossa nova with electric guitars and feedback and a little nod to the Frenchman. Original atmosphere, it's so natural.
|
| Guardian - John L Walters |
| You could trawl through acres of supposedly "sexy" Brazil chill albums without finding tracks as good as the 11 songs on this entirely delightful album from singer-songwriter-guitarist Cantuaria. ****
|
| Jazzwise - Kevin Le Gendre |
| It is really Cantuaria the singer-songwriter conceptualist who makes this album a veritable minor classic. **** |
