· A milestone of German jazz – on CD for the first time. Folk Mond (moon) & Flower Dream is the legendary 1968 free improvisation by trombonist Albert Mangelsdorff and his quintet : Heinz Sauer (tenor and soprano sax), Günter Kronberg (alto & baritone sax), Günter Lenz (bass) & Ralf Hübner (drums).
· Mangelsdorff was at this time the first German jazz musician to receive recognition in the USA, where all three of his quintet albums were given high ratings in Downbeat magazine.
· But it’s highly accessible music, full of an absorbing power, energy and indeed structure, but with a tender ballad style too (as on Flower Dream itself).
· Folk Mond & Flower Dream was the 3rd and last studio recording by this quintet, who became a quartet after the departure of Günter Kronberg, and then broke up in the ‘70s.
· The original LP (long sought-after by collectors), recorded in September 1967 and released in 1968, was deleted (due to label takeovers) in 1986 and had not been officially available on any format from then until now. Sadly, Albert Mangelsdorff died on 25th July 2005, before seeing his masterpiece reissued.
