► Considered one of the first boogie-woogie piano players, Jimmy Blythe worked regularly in Chicago from 1915 onwards, played with Johnny Dodds and accompanied the likes of Ma Rainey & Blind Blake on recordings

► He also produced hundreds of piano rolls for use in nickelodeons, a selection of which is reproduced here

► Thanks to modern technology the tunes which Blythe created for the pianola can be heard again with such clarity they sound as if he is right in the room
