• Getachew Mekurya is an astonishing Ethiopian sax player who developed a style of playing in the 50’s comparable to Albert Ayler or Ornette Coleman, shortly before either of them recorded and well before he could have heard them anyway.
• His recordings are well documented on volume 14 of the superb Ethiopiques series, Negus of Ethiopian Sax, two tracks of which are included on the incredibly successful Union Square double CD Best of Ethiopiques. These tracks have caused great interest among listeners and music critics.
• This DVD is a film by Stephane Jourdain, made in March 2006, documenting the meeting of Gatatchew Mekurya and The Ex - a Dutch punk-rock combo. They were filmed working on a studio CD and appearing at the Banlieues Bleues Festival at Bobigny, Paris in April 2006.
• Mekurya’s phenomenal style was based on a saxophone recreation of the Ethiopian harsh 'Shellela' singing style and the music on this DVD all stems from traditional Ethiopian material transposed to a powerful Western rock based setting.
