From humble beginnings in Havana, Cuba, as one of fourteen children, Dona Celia has gone on to achieve worldwide fame as the undisputed queen of salsa. Originally invited to sing with Sonora Mantancera in 1950, then the most popular Cuban dance band in Havana, Celia left Cuba for the US in 1960 when Castro came to power. In the US she wasted no time starting a solo career with a band put together for her by timbales legend Tito Puente and then recorded with Tito himself. It was not until she signed to Vaya, a sister label of Fania, however, that her recording career really took off.

At home at Vaya Celia recorded many of her most well-known classics - Cucala, Quimbara, Ay Mi Cuba, La Cumbanchera, Quien Sera – songs that she still plays at concerts around the world. As latin music – and latin jazz and salsa in particular - grow in popularity, one artist stands out as the genre’s pre-eminent female performer – Celia Cruz
