A fascinating CD which ‘brings together’ some of Schoenberg’s more extrovert music, from his ‘Serenade’ and Pierrot Lunaire, mixed with pieces by the Schrammel brothers, who were pub musicians (but of the highest class!) in the Vienna of Schoenberg’s youth. Did they influence the “father” of modern music? This disc may or may not provide the answer! But it is surely worth hearing, as an attempt to put the revolutionary music of the ‘Second Viennese School’ into some kind of context.
