Butch Hancock's "War and Peace" is his first solo CD in nearly 9 years - and the Texan country-folk singer-songwriter delivers an album of original protest songs, aimed especially at another Texan, George W. Bush - as well as soul-searching songs about the times we live in.
Hancock was a founding member of the legendary Flatlanders, and fellow band-members from those days - Joe Ely and Jimmie Dale Gilmore - join in on some vocals on this album.
Hancock’s style is reminiscent of latter-day Bob Dylan, but there’s the downhome honesty of Woody Guthrie too, as well as a mixture of country, folk-rock and new ‘old time’ ballads. The lyrics move from anti-war, to religion, politics, and the trials and tribulations of existence - with Hancock playing over a dozen different instruments, and only Flatlander electric guitarist Rob Gjersoe in support.
