The Essential Guide To Cajun showcases the music of the original Louisiana settlers. Here we present 3 discs from the 1920’s Pioneers, through the 1940’s Revival, when the accordion made a come-back, to Zydeco, Swamp Pop and The New Generation – featuring the huge resurgence in Cajun music from the 1970’s and 80’s that still continues today.
CD1 – THE REVIVAL – includes re-interpretations of some of the earliest Cajun recordings, when the accordion made a comeback in the late 40’s led by Iry LeJeune, through to further revitalisation in the early 60’s when the likes of D.L.Menard (the Cajun Hank Williams!) put Cajun back on the musical map of American music.
CD2 – PIONEERS – traces the earliest Cajun recordings, sung in Cajun-French with violin and influences of folk music from black, white and Native American traditions, through to the familiar accordion sound from early 30’s Louisiana, when banjo’s and mandolins joined the throng to create a new sound fused with jazz and western swing.
CD3 – ZYDECO, SWAMP POP AND THE NEW GENERATION – Zydeco, of black origin, is fast paced, rhythmic and dominated by the button accordion and washboard – originally created for rural dance-halls! Swamp Pop arrived in the 50’s, mixing R’n’B, Country, Cajun and Creole, combining Rock’n’Roll with South Louisiana traditions. This new generation of Cajun musicians with their ever evolving sound, enjoyed a new resurgence in the 70’s and 80’s that still continues today.
