Spanning 1955 to 1958, Johnny Cash's recordings for Sam Phillips' Sun label stand amongst the greatest American music of the last fifty years. Rubber-stamping the deadpan delivery that would become his trademark throughout his career, Cash’s Sun repertoire was largely recorded with the sparse guitar, bass and pedal steel backing of the Tennessee Three, a confident and very different formula to the fuller rock’n’roll sound of label mates Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley.
